Lilongwe Wildlife Centre is Malawi's largest wildlife sanctuary dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, and release of injured and orphaned wild animals, offering a unique opportunity for immersive wildlife education and conservation awareness.
Located on the outskirts of Lilongwe, Malawi’s capital city, the Lilongwe Wildlife Centre spans approximately 22 acres of natural habitat aimed at rehabilitating native African wildlife. Established in 2007, this facility serves as a sanctuary for rescued wildlife including primates, antelopes, reptiles, and birds that have been orphaned, injured, or seized from illegal pet trade and poaching activities. The centre works closely with Malawi Wildlife and Environmental authorities to ensure the eventual release of animals back into protected wilderness areas once they are deemed healthy and capable of surviving independently.
The grounds feature semi-natural enclosures designed to mimic wild settings, allowing visitors to observe animals such as vervet monkeys, bushbucks, bush babies, crocodiles, and various bird species in habitats resembling their native environment. The centre actively promotes educational outreach programs to raise awareness of the impact of habitat loss and wildlife trafficking. Visitors can enjoy guided tours where they learn about Malawi’s biodiversity, conservation challenges, and species biology.
Though relatively small compared to larger national parks or game reserves, the Lilongwe Wildlife Centre offers an intimate experience with conservation at its core. The centre’s location adjacent to urban Lilongwe makes it easily accessible while presenting a vital refuge for wildlife threatened by urban expansion. Outdoor enthusiasts and families alike benefit from the mix of outdoor walking trails and close encounters with rescued wildlife in a safe environment. The centre also hosts volunteer programs that provide hands-on experience in animal care and environmental stewardship.
